Origin, Design, and Specs
This Ugly starfighter is a cobbled-together creation, using the spherical central pod of a TIE fighter as its core with the elongated nose of a New Republic-era E-wing fused to it, giving it aerodynamic flair. A pair of bulky ion engines from a BTL Y-wing provide heavy-duty propulsion, giving the mishmash design with a gritty, utilitarian vibe.
Armed with 2 laser cannons mounted on either side of the TIE fighter pod, this TEY-wing packs a punch. A rotating twin ion cannon sits atop the pod, offering rear-facing firepower when pursued — a rare, but clever, feature in a ship of this class. While it lacks a hyperdrive, it’s equipped with a small deflector shield, making it suitable for short-range planetary defense or quick hit-and-run missions when deployed from a larger transport. True to the spirit of Star Wars Uglies, this starfighter prioritizes functionality and firepower over aesthetics, embodying the rough-and-ready ingenuity of the galaxy’s fringe factions.
Creating the TEY-wing in LEGO
The TEY-wing is the 55th Ugly I’ve designed. Like most of my Uglies that feature a TIE fighter, it’s based on the older LEGO set 75300. I started with LEGO’s version of the E-wing that’s included in LEGO set 75364, but customized various parts of the front and cockpit. The Y-wing ion engines are loosely based on LEGO set 75249, but customized quite a lot. The result is something completely unique, very sturdy, and extremely swooshable. The top comes off, allowing full access to the cockpit and a 2×4 storage area behind it (in the TIE fighter pod), which I added a storage crate to, but it could be customized to store an Astromech droid (to help keep the ship running).

Role in Star Wars
In the Star Wars universe, “Uglies” are cobbled-together starfighters built from salvaged parts of other ships—often by pirates, mercenaries, or struggling factions—resulting in chaotic, asymmetrical designs that value function over form. First seen in Legends and later in canon, Uglies reflect both in-universe ingenuity and the real-world kitbashing technique pioneered by ILM modelers during the original trilogy.
