The Grav Scoot is the customized hover-scooter ridden by the Mods (also called the Modifier gang), a street gang of cyborgs operating in the Worker’s District of Mos Espa on Tatooine. Introduced in The Book of Boba Fett, Chapter 3: “The Streets of Mos Espa,” the gang’s chrome-covered, mirror-heavy scooters were a direct nod to 1960s British mod culture and its love of dressing up Vespas and Lambrettas with mirrors, lights, and badges. Fans nicknamed the speeders “Mespas,” a mashup of Vespa and Mos Espa, before “Grav Scoot” was ever confirmed as the official name.

Origin and Design

The Mods get their name from modifying their bodies with droid parts, and their scooters got the same treatment. Led by Drash and Skad, the gang initially resorts to petty theft to afford water in Mos Espa, before Boba Fett offers them work in exchange for calling off the raids. They go on to help fend off the Wookiee gladiator Krrsantan and chase down Mayor Mok Shaiz’s majordomo through the streets of Mos Espa on their Grav Scoots.

The show never explains who built these scooters or why no two look quite alike, which left plenty of room to fill in the gaps myself. Every visible detail, the mismatched mirrors, the different engine housings, the handlebar shapes, reads as a personal modification rather than a factory spec, exactly the kind of gang that would ride matching but never identical machines.

Creating the Grav Scoot (a.k.a., Mespa Speeder)

This is the v3 redesign of a MOC I first launched in 2022, three days after the Grav Scoot appeared on screen. Going back to it meant a frame-by-frame rewatch of the Mos Espa chase and the brief Mandalorian cameo, which is where I caught my biggest mistake: I’d used the same mirrors on all four color versions, when each one is actually unique.

• Screen-accurate mirrors, unique to each color version instead of one shared part across all four
• Redesigned engine that narrows from two studs to one, matching the tapered shape seen on screen
• Two studs shorter, front and rear, than the original release, for a true moped-like scale
• Bracket-mounted engine connection, replacing the original pin-hole plate for a closer match to the on-screen shape

Role in Star Wars

The Grav Scoot first appeared in The Book of Boba Fett, Season 1, Episode 3, “The Streets of Mos Espa” (2022), ridden by the Mods, a gang led by Drash and Skad. It later made a brief cameo in The Mandalorian, Season 3, Episode 6, “Guns for Hire” (2023), where white base-model versions appear parked on the planet Plazir-15.
