The R93 Refractor is a custom LEGO MOC of the Rokana Raiders starfighter introduced in the Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune expansion. As far as I know, this is the only LEGO version of the ship in existence, and its unusual dual-rotating wing system helps explain why.
The finished model recreates all three wing configurations from the game, supported by a Technic structure engineered for both display and handling.
Design
The defining feature of the R93 Refractor is its dual-rotating wing system. The wings move between three distinct configurations:
- Docking Mode: Both wings rotated up, side-by-side.
- Scout Mode: When taking off, the large wing rotates down, allowing for all 3 engines to be in use, but only 2 of the cannons active. As the landing gear retracts, a stabilizer extends from the bottom of the fuselage.
- Assault Mode: Both wings rotate horizontal, with the larger wing on the port side. Power is diverted from the 2 side engines to the 2 extra cannons, resulting in increased firepower, but reduced maneuverability.
Recreating these three modes physically in LEGO was the central engineering challenge. I spent hours studying the ship through the game’s photo mode, then built the model around LEGO Technic turntables with interlocking pins and axles.
Because the wings are large and the turntables provide no resistance, the structure had to be engineered to hold each configuration instead of relying on friction. The completed wings are strong enough to support the model during handling, giving it maximum swooshability.
SNOT techniques throughout the fuselage create the ship’s rounded profile. The cockpit accommodates one minifigure, and the removable lower windscreen provides direct access to the custom pilot’s seat.
