D-Wing Starfighter
The D-Wing Starfighter is a custom LEGO MOC based on original concept art by Matthew Savage. The design stood out immediately: an unusual half-circle silhouette, prominent air intakes flanking the cockpit, a thin nose that thickens toward the rear engine housings, and greebled mechanical detail throughout. Sleek but slightly awkward in the best possible way, it feels like it belongs in the Rebel Alliance fleet.

Design
Matthew Savage’s concept art gives the ship the character of a ship that has already lived a life. I wanted the LEGO model to retain that history through its worn markings, bold red striping, battle damage, and exposed mechanical details. Preserving those details was as important as getting the shape right.
The central challenge was creating the compound D-shaped curve, which has to read correctly from the front, top, and sides at the same time. I established the proportions from the concept art using a pixel-to-stud conversion, then developed an internal SNOT framework that rotates the building direction at multiple points while keeping the structure rigid. The framework took several weeks and multiple prototypes to refine, but the finished model is one of the strongest ships I’ve designed.
