Toscan 8-Q

Toscan 8-Q LEGO MOC by ScruffyBrickHerder from Star Wars Legends

The Toscan 8-Q is an obscure starfighter from the Star Wars Legends era, unique both for it’s profile and origins. While it was never featured in any movie or series, it was one of the ships included in the 1999 X-Wing Alliance video game.

Building instructions and a complete parts list are available on Rebrickable for $7.

New to Rebrickable? It’s the marketplace for custom LEGO instructions. You purchase and download a PDF, then use the included parts list to source pieces through BrickLink or your preferred parts store. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ordering parts.

Origin and Design

The Toscan 8-Q was manufactured by Shobquix Yards before the Clone Wars. Its origins are unique for two reasons. First, they outsourced the cockpit to Koensayr, who later used it in their own Y-Wing starfighter. Second, it was intended to be a modular starfighter platform they could sell to other shipyards to customize it to fit their needs. But, the project was a failure, and Shobquix had to sell off their huge stock at a discount, making their way to pirates and the fringes.

The Toscan 8-Q was armed with two laser cannons and a concussion missile launcher, all in the cockpit module, part of what would become standard with a Y-Wing. The four vertical fin-tipped protrusions are not weapons, but instead sensors or targeting arrays. It was also equipped with a hyperdrive and weak deflector shields.

Creating the Toscan 8-Q

This custom MOC is designed at 1:41 scale, typical for a minigure-scaled ship. It uses a Y-Wing cockpit based on the LEGO set 75172, but I changed the interior, increasing the depth to better position a minifigure pilot. Other key features include:

  • Removable storage in the fuselage
  • Detailed cockpit interior, with a proper pilot seat and flight controls
  • Brick-built, SNOT-based wings that are very strong
  • Vertical fins that can be retracted for landing
  • Removable landing gear to display either landed or removed to display in-flight

I conducted in-depth proportion analysis on the original West End Games illustration and X-Wing Alliance renders to recreate this ship in LEGO form. It’s very strong and swooshable, with a unique profile that displays well amongst other Star Wars ships.

On Patreon, I published a four-part behind-the scenes series covering how this ship came together. It covers the customizations I made to the Y-Wing cockpit and the prototypes for the wings and vertical fins. Tier 1 (Hangar Crew) membership gets you these articles and every other similar behind-the-scenes article I publish.

Role in Star Wars
