Dwarf Spider Droid (from The Clone Wars)

The Separatists may have had their share of intimidating war machines — those spindly-legged, soulless automatons marching into battle with the cold efficiency of a factory conveyor belt — but few are as equally creepy and cute as the DSD1 Dwarf Spider Droid. Introduced in Attack of the Clones and seen frequently throughout The Clone Wars, this short-statured menace punches well above its weight class. It’s a roving ball of armor, blaster barrel, and sheer attitude.

Origin, Design, and Specs

The DSD1 Dwarf Spider Droid was a four-legged combat droid manufactured by Baktoid Armor Workshop for the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) during the Clone Wars. Despite its small size, it played a crucial role in infantry support and anti-vehicle operations. Its design featured a dome-shaped body with red photoreceptor eyes, four articulated legs for stable movement over rough terrain, and a nose-mounted laser cannon to blast troops, vehicles, and aircraft. Durable and reliable, the DSD1 was a common sight in Separatist forces, though its slow speed and limited field of vision left it vulnerable to flanking attacks.

Creating the Dwarf Spider Droid in LEGO

I wanted to include this droid in my large Clone Wars MOC, but none of the official LEGO versions quite captured the look I was going for — I wanted something more screen-accurate. Surprisingly, designing something this small took more time than expected, but at just 59 pieces, I think this version really delivers. Each leg features four points of articulation: three for vertical and horizontal adjustments, and a fourth for side-to-side pivoting, giving it a wide range of posing options. The laser cannon also tilts up slightly and angles all the way down, just like in the show.

On Aug 1, 2025 LEGO released an updated version of their Dwarf Spider Droid in set 75431, and I believe mine has better designed eyes (the LEGO version sticks out in an odd way) and much better and more-articulated legs. Of course, I’m under no budget or parts limitations like they are.

LEGO Building Instructions

I’ve created high-quality building instructions for you to build the Dwarf Spider Droid yourself. You can find the instructions and parts list on Rebrickable, where you can then easily order the parts from third-party LEGO resellers on Bricklink. I’ve built this droid myself using the instructions. Due to the small set size, I’ve made these building instructions free, so you can either build my version, or use it to customize the new LEGO set 75431.

Role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The DSD1 Dwarf Spider Droid played a significant role throughout the Clone Wars, often deployed as frontline support for Separatist battle droid units. They were used extensively on Geonosis, Felucia, and Kashyyyk and could operate in confined or vertical terrain, even scaling cliffs to fire on clone troopers. These droids often self-destructed when cornered, earning a reputation as a lethal, cost-effective ambush unit.
