Uglies

In Star Wars, an “Ugly” is a cobbled-together starfighter built from salvaged parts of other ships. Pirates, mercenaries, and underfunded factions often build them due to limited resources. These ships mix elements from X-wings, TIE fighters, and Y-wings into chaotic, asymmetrical designs. They prioritize function over form. Despite being unreliable and jarring, Uglies show the creativity and grit of their builders. They serve vital roles in the galaxy’s rougher regions.

Star Wars Uglies first appeared in Legends and later became canon in the Poe Dameron comics. Their design mirrors “kitbashing,” a modeling technique that combines parts from different kits. Kitbashing helped define the original Star Wars look. ILM modelers used it heavily to create ships for the original trilogy. Fans have embraced Uglies, including LEGO builder ScruffyBrickHerder. LEGO released set 75393, “TIE Fighter & X-Wing Mash-up,” on August 1, 2024. It’s part of the “Rebuild the Galaxy” line and celebrates Ugly-style creativity.
